The Dig-Down at Union Station - Structural Innovation and Heritage Conservation
Union Station, which opened in 1927, is Canada’s busiest transit hub. Until the 1970s, the station served as a primary gateway for immigrants arriving in Toronto. Its role shifted with the introduction of GO Transit, Ontario’s commuter train network, which has seen significant growth over the years. In 2006, the City of Toronto initiated a revitalization plan to expand and modernize the station, anticipating an increase in annual passengers from 70 million to a projected 90 million by 2036.
