North Bay Engineer Honoured for Valuable Contributions to Promoting the Engineering Profession in his Community

PRESS RELEASE

Toronto – (April 27, 2015) – In recognition of his tireless recruitment of new volunteers and promotion of the engineering profession, John Simmonds, P.Eng., FEC, of North Bay, has been named a Member of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Order of Honour. He was inducted into the Order at an April 24 gala in Toronto.

A key member of PEO’s North Bay Chapter executive for the past 14 years, Simmonds has always been willing to get involved in planning and staging events to raise the profile of engineering. A respected leader who led several chapter committees and chaired the chapter in 2009, Simmonds is dedicated to promoting the profession to students and the public. For years, he was involved in the Spring Fling, a fundraiser that brings together local engineers for an evening of networking to benefit the Community Living Association, which provides support to people with intellectual disabilities.

Most recently, he was part of a chapter initiative that successfully advocated for the establishment of an engineering degree program at Nipissing University. As a result of his efforts, the process to establish the program is now underway and it is hoped this will reduce barriers for local students wishing to study engineering.

Simmonds cites seeing young engineer and EIT volunteers mature and take responsibility for running many aspects of his chapter’s operations as his most rewarding experience as a PEO volunteer.

The Order of Honour pays tribute to individuals who have rendered conspicuous service to the engineering profession. The rank of Member is bestowed upon those who have served the profession by contributing substantially to its operation or improvement in its status.
