London engineer celebrated for his volunteer work and contributions to protecting the public interest

PRESS RELEASE

Toronto – (May 13, 2019) – For his dedication and longtime service to the engineering profession, Peter Broad, P.Eng., FEC., CEng, MIMMM, of London, Ontario, has been named an Officer of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Order of Honour. He was inducted into the Order at a gala on May 3 in Toronto.

While working as a mining engineer in Northern Ontario, Broad began volunteering with the Porcupine/Kapuskasing Chapter in 1995, serving both on the executive, and as chair from 2001-2003. During this time, he was a vocal champion for northern chapters.

Broad has also been active at the provincial level, chairing both the Enforcement Committee and the Repeal of Industrial Exception Task Force, as well as participating on the Professional Standards Committee.

A strong advocate for increasing the number of professional engineers in industry, he has participated or chaired several Enforcement Committee subcommittees including Enhanced Enforcement for Industry, the Enforcement of Business Names and the Definition of Engineering. He also spearheaded a proposal to replace the Guideline for Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews with an enforceable performance standard.

Peter urges others to get involved in volunteering. “The keys to success include an ability to look beyond one’s own role; firmly believing you have something to contribute; and an ability to recognize achievement,” he says.

The Order of Honour pays tribute to individuals who have rendered conspicuous service to the engineering profession. The rank of Officer is bestowed upon those who have served the profession for many years and whose sustained leadership has contributed greatly to its operation or improvement in its status.
