PEO publishes a variety of resources to assist licence holders in their roles and responsibilities, as well as guidance for applicants going through the licensure process.

Resources

Ontario professional engineers are part of a community of more than 87,500 PEO licence and certificate holders committed to enhancing the quality of life, safety and well-being in the province.

As Ontario’s engineering regulator, PEO relies heavily on its volunteers. More than 1,000 professional engineers, engineering interns and non-engineers volunteer their time each year on behalf of the association through their participation.

PEO's mandate, as described in the Professional Engineers Act, is to ensure that the public is protected and that individuals and companies providing engineering services uphold a strict code of professional ethics and conduct.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Good Performance policy allows new exam registrants to complete their academic requirements sooner if they meet the criteria listed below.

To benefit from the policy, you must register for two technical exams in your first sitting. If you achieve qualifying marks, the waiver will be applied and confirmed in the application portal.

If you are writing technical exams for the first time, choose to write two exams instead of four:

  • Two from Group A, or
  • One from Group A and one from Group B
  • Both exams must be from the same engineering discipline, e.g., MEC, CIV, ELEC, etc.

If you achieve a grade of at least 65 per cent on your first two exams, we will waive your remaining exam requirements.

Please note that PEO must receive the WES course-by-course evaluation of your bachelor’s degree, or the transcript for your US bachelor’s degree, to enable the waiver of exams.

Yes. Ontario’s new mobility legislation, which takes effect on January 1, 2026, allows licensed professionals who are certified out of province to apply to work in Ontario through a simplified process. The legislation allows for the issuance of a temporary “deemed certified” licence within 10 business days, with a decision on full registration made within six months. PEO will exceed these requirements by issuing a decision on a full P.Eng. licence within 10 business days, provided the application is complete.

You can no longer access/verify your PEO portal account using phone numbers outside of the North American +1 country code. You may continue to verify your account by email or by downloading and using either:

  • OKTA Verify authentication app (android or apple download); or
  • Google Authenticator authentication app (android or apple download)

All portal users may change their MFA verification preferences at any time by logging into the portal, navigating to the Profile tab, selecting “Change MFA Option” and enrolling in the desired MFA option.

All exam purchases are final and non-refundable. Once a purchase is made, you cannot change your selection, and exams are not transferable between sittings. Therefore, be prepared to take any exam you purchase.

The digital certificate reflects the same information that appears on the printed certificate at the time it was issued. Licence and practising status can change annually based on the licence holder’s declaration. For the most up-to-date status, we recommend checking the PEO directory.

PEO licence holders who are engineering lecturers must complete the PEAK program because they hold a PEO licence—either a P.Eng. or limited licence—even though the teaching of engineering is not included in the provincial definition of the practice of professional engineering. They could be allocated either full or reduced PEAK requirements depending on whether their non-teaching activities are the practice of professional engineering, including their research, development, supervision and projects. Engineering lecturers with a licence status of “not permitted to practise” are only required to complete the reduced PEAK requirements (practice evaluation and professional practice module) because they are non-practising (their non-teaching activities are not the practice of professional engineering.) However, engineering lecturers with a licence status of “permitted to practise” are required to complete the full PEAK requirements (practice evaluation, professional practice module and CPD report) because their non-teaching activities include the practice of professional engineering.

Engineering lecturers who voluntarily choose a licence status of “not permitted to practise” are only required to complete the reduced PEAK requirements (practice evaluation and professional practice module) because they are non-practising (their research, projects and non-teaching activities are not the practice of professional engineering.) However, engineering lecturers are required to complete the full PEAK requirements (practice evaluation, professional practice module and CPD report) because their research, projects and non-teaching activities include the practice of professional engineering.

Licence holders who are engineering lecturers with a PEAK CPD reporting requirement are likely to be able to comply with their PEAK requirements quickly because they are likely to have a large number of CPD activities to choose from and declare on their PEAK CPD reports.

Note: The requirement for engineering lecturers to hold a PEO licence is not one that is imposed by PEO.

Yes. All applicants must meet our licensing requirements and submit the necessary documents. Requirements are outlined on the Canadian P.Eng. Mobility Application web page.

Registration deadlines are firm. PEO cannot accommodate late registrations once the deadline has passed.

The digital licence certificate is not intended for printing. It is offered as a complementary option for convenient online access.

Please note that printed licence certificates remain valid and in use. If you have misplaced your printed wall certificate from PEO and would like to order a replacement, please complete the licence certificate form and send it to [email protected].
