Kingston engineer celebrated for his leadership and volunteer work within the profession

PRESS RELEASE

Toronto – (April 26, 2018) – Praised for his vision and leadership, Chris Roney, P.Eng., IntPE, BDS, FEC, FACE, UE, of Kingston, has been named a Companion of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Order of Honour. He was inducted into the Order at a gala on April 20 in Toronto.

Roney has been an active PEO volunteer for more than two decades. He has served PEO in various capacities including providing leadership on Council as a regional councillor, elected vice president, lieutenant governor-in-Council appointee and as a Council representative to several external organizations.

PEO Council elected Roney in 2009 as one of its representatives on the board of directors of Engineers Canada, which later appointed him as its president in 2016. As president of Engineers Canada, he represented the profession across Canada, the United States and internationally, including at the World Federation of Engineering Organizations.

In 2013, Roney represented PEO at the roundtable sessions during the Elliot Lake Commission of Inquiry into the collapse of the Algo Centre Mall. He was instrumental in drafting the association’s recommendations, almost all of which were adopted by the commission, and included developing performance standards for structural inspections of existing buildings; mandating that a Structural Adequacy Report of existing buildings be prepared by structural engineering specialists; and being more transparent about the discipline history of licence holders.

Roney was also an integral member of the team that successfully challenged the provincial government in 2007, when they attempted to introduce their own certification regime in areas related to building code compliance and general review of construction.

He has been a member of and chaired many PEO committees including the Executive, Enforcement, Finance, Audit, and Communications committees, as well as the Continuing Professional Development, Competence and Quality Assurance Task Force. He has also lent his expertise to the Engineers, Architects and Building Officials Committee since 2012, and for over 20 years has been a member of the Complaints Committee, where he currently serves as its chair.

His volunteer contributions and leadership have had significant impact on the engineering profession in Ontario, across Canada and beyond.

The Order of Honour pays tribute to individuals who have rendered conspicuous service to the engineering profession. The Order of Honour's highest distinction, the rank of Companion recognizes contributions that exceed those of Officer. It is reserved exclusively for individuals whose distinguished service has profoundly influenced the profession.
