Tahir Shafiq is a professional engineer, senior business executive, and governance leader with more than twenty-eight years of sustained volunteer service to the engineering profession and the broader community.
Since 1997, Tahir has served on PEO’s Experience Requirements Committee (ERC). In this role, he contributed to evaluating licensure applicants, maintaining professional standards, and protecting the public interest. He provides coaching, constructive feedback, and guidance, helping candidates meet rigorous experience and competency requirements. Many of these individuals now practise as engineers and contribute to Ontario’s infrastructure and economy.
In addition to his committee service, Tahir has represented PEO for more than twenty years on Engineers Canada’s Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) accreditation teams . In this capacity, he helped evaluate numerous Canadian university engineering programs, ensuring that academic curricula meet national standards and adequately prepare graduates for professional practice. His work has strengthened alignment between engineering education and licensure requirements.
Beyond his PEO volunteer contributions, Tahir has lent his engineering know-how to several community boards, including:
- York Region Children’s Aid Society (CAS) – As Chair, Tahir led governance modernization and the creation of the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism Committee.
- Canadian Mental Health Association (York & Simcoe) – Contributed engineering and governance perspectives to support mental health initiatives, infrastructure planning and service delivery.
- Community Living York South – Served on the Board and Investment Committee, providing leadership on strategic planning and resource allocation.
Through decades of volunteer service, Tahir exemplifies the highest ideals of the engineering profession and continues to make meaningful contributions to engineering regulation, education, inclusion and public trust.
