This is a repeat of our exceptionally popular Understanding and Shaping Ontario’s Building Code: A Guide for Engineer technical presentation. We have invited our guest speaker, Reza Mirza Hessabi, back again and we hope this will give those who were not able to attend the previous sessions a chance to participate.

Event Information:

This presentation will provide an overview of Ontario’s building regulations, beginning with the framework of the National and Ontario Building Codes (OBC), the role of municipalities, and key dispute resolution mechanisms. It will also cover the latest amendments to the 2024 Ontario Building Code, highlighting significant changes and their impact on the construction and engineering industries.

Looking ahead, the discussion will explore emerging trends shaping the future of building regulations, including performance-based design, the increasing role of AI and digital transformation in compliance and enforcement, modular and factory-built housing, climate change resiliency, and evolving sustainability standards.

Finally, the presentation will highlight opportunities for engineers to actively influence the regulatory landscape. This includes contributing to policy discussions, engaging in code development, and participating in technical committees with organizations such as PEO, CSA, and municipal and provincial regulatory bodies. This session aims to equip engineers with the knowledge and pathways to help shape the future of building regulations in Ontario.
