PEO York Chapter: Mass Timber: Building for the Future
Courtyard Toronto Markham
65 Minthorn Blvd, Markham, ON
Event Information:
Mass timber construction is a growing global phenomenon. In addition to its environmental benefits, one of its standout advantages is its compatibility with prefabrication. As we look to the future of construction, the future of sustainable construction lies in industrialized, factory-built solutions. Factory-built solutions are key to the significant gains in construction efficiency and building performance that we need to improve our built environment and reduce our carbon footprint.
Precision built, prefabricated mass timber delivers many key advantages such as optimized material use, improved thermal efficiency, reduced operational energy costs, reduced carbon emissions, and increased asset values. The Ontario government’s decision to allow mass timber buildings of up to 18 storeys (effective as of January 1, 2025), underscores growing confidence in its potential.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the Growing Role of Mass Timber in the Construction Industry: Participants will gain insights into the increasing importance of mass timber, with a focus on its environmental, economic, and aesthetic benefits, and how these factors make it a sustainable and viable alternative to traditional building materials.
- Explore the Impact of New Building Codes on Mass Timber Adoption: Attendees will learn about the recent addition of 18 stories to the Ontario Building Code, understanding how this regulatory change highlights the growing potential of mass timber for large-scale construction projects.
- Examine Real-World Applications and Projects of Mass Timber:
Participants will explore a variety of mass timber projects across North America, gaining practical knowledge of its application, installation, and constructability, and have the opportunity to engage in discussions and ask questions.
