Event Information:
This presentation will provide an overview of cement manufacturing, the crucial ingredient in concrete – the world’s most versatile construction material. The presentation will focus on the raw materials required for cement manufacturing and the process of taking those ingredients and creating the glue that holds our world together. Types of cement will be discussed, what their designations mean in the standard.
Additionally, the presentation will talk about some of the Supplementary Cementitious Materials which can be used as a partial replacement of cement in concrete – generally to achieve specific concrete properties while more recently being used as a method of making concrete more sustainable. Other materials of concrete will also be discussed, as well as some of the concrete properties which are important to creating lasting structures.

Our Speaker:
Ritchie Popoff, P.Eng.
Manager of Technical Services, Federal White Cement
Ritchie holds a degree in Aerospace Engineering from Carleton University. He first worked for airplane parts manufacturing company Fleet Canada as their Quality Lab supervisor. After joining St Mary's Cement, Ritchie worked on a wide variety of cement and concrete related areas including concrete mix design, troubleshooting, specification clarification and compliance. As the Technical Services Manager for Ontario, he also worked with the cement plants in determining quality objectives and maintained strong customer relationships. Ritchie also served as a technical committee member at Concrete Ontario and Ontario Concrete Pipe Association, and Regional Technical Committee Past-Chair at the Cement Association of Canada (CAC). Currently, he is a member at both CSA technical committees for CSA A3000 and CSA A23.1/2. Ritchie is also a board member of American Concrete Institute Ontario Chapter since 2018.
