Virtual Open House for Potential Candidates in 2026 PEO Council Elections

A virtual open house was held on Tuesday, November 4, 7:00 to 9:00 pm (EST). 

This interactive session will provided an opportunity to ask questions of the Chief Elections Officer regarding the Nomination and Voting Procedures, the Election Publicity Procedures, and Nomination Forms. The session will also featured discussions on:

  • Election Process
  • Overview of PEO Council
  • Role of Councillors
  • Time commitment
  • Experiences of current and former Councillors

*During the open virtual house, it was mentioned that an individual must serve on Council for at least one year before being eligible to run for president. To clarify, this requirement is not currently in place. While the policy has been discussed by Council, it has not been formally adopted.

An election will be held from January 26 to February 23, 2026, to elect Councillors to the 2026-2027 Council of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).

PEO seeks candidates for election to Council who reflect the diversity of the engineering profession and who can guide, support and contribute as we work together to set PEO’s strategic direction; ensure our regulatory work is done efficiently and effectively; and continually improve and prepare for the future.

Positions Open for Election:

  • President-elect: One position, for a three-year term. (One year as president-elect, one year as president and one year as past president.)
  • Vice president: One position, for a one-year term.
  • Councillors-at-large: One position, for a two-year term.
  • Regional councillors: Five positions (one for each of PEO’s five regions), for a two-year term.

New Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible to run, you must:

  1. Have completed a Council-approved orientation course.
  2. Be a member in good standing with PEO. This means that the member’s licence is not under suspension, not cancelled, or not revoked.
  3. Have no findings of professional misconduct, incompetence, or incapacity by PEO or any other regulatory body in Canada.
  4. At the time of nomination, must not be declared incapable of managing property or personal care under the Substitute Decisions Act, 1992 or Mental Health Act; or be the subject of a finding of incapacity by a court in Canada.
  5. Not be an undischarged bankrupt.
  6. Not have been disqualified from sitting on Council within the past three years.
  7. Not be an adverse party in a civil action for damages against PEO.
  8. Not be a director of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE).
  9. Not be the spouse, parent, grandparent, child or grandchild of a PEO employee.
  10. Not have been convicted, as an adult, of an offence under the Criminal Code 9 (Canada), the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (Canada) or comparable legislation, unless a record suspension has been granted.
  11. Have no pending charges under the Criminal Code (Canada), the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (Canada) or any comparable legislation of any jurisdiction.
  12. Not have been convicted, in the past ten years, of an offence under any provincial statute where the conviction resulted in imprisonment.
     

Nomination Process:

  1. Nominations: A licence holder may be nominated for election to Council as President-elect, Vice President or a Councillor-at-Large by fifteen other licence holders, including residents from each region. A licence holder may be nominated for election to Council as a Regional Councillor for a region by fifteen other licence holders who reside in the region.

  2. Acceptance forms: Candidates must complete a nomination acceptance form. See below for nomination acceptance forms for each position.
     
  3. Submit nominations: Completed nomination petitions and acceptance forms must be emailed to the Chief Elections Officer at [email protected], by 10 a.m. Eastern Time, Monday, November 24, 2025. No personal delivery of forms will be accepted. For further information on becoming a candidate, please refer to the 2026 Council Elections Guide. Nominees are strongly encouraged to submit nominations well in advance of the deadline. All nominations will be confirmed within one business day.
     
  4. Candidate training: All candidates must complete a PEO Orientation Course by December 31, 2025. Click here to access the orientation course.
     

Do you want to play a key role in leading and guiding the regulation of professional engineering in Ontario? As a PEO Councillor, consider the impact you can make by influencing regulatory initiatives and critical policy issues at the profession’s highest level.

Nominations open on Monday, October 20, 2025. But hurry—you only have until November 24, 2025 to nominate yourself or a fellow engineer.

 

  • Nominations open: October 20, 2025
  • Nominations close: November 24, 2025 (10 a.m. EST)
  • Mandatory PEO Orientation Course training deadline: December 31, 2025
  • Candidates list and voting instructions sent to licence holders: 
    no later than January 26, 2026
  • 2026 PEO Council elections voting begins: January 26, 2026
  • Voting closes: February 23, 2026 (10 a.m. EST)
     

The work of Council is enhanced when its members possess specific atributes, knowledge and experiences related to the objectives of PEO, such as:

  • A commitment to the mandate, vision, and values of PEO, including a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge about board governance and professional self-regulation.
  • Experience in areas such as governance, change management, marketing, finance, risk governance, strategic planning, and talent management. 

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Attributes

  • Diversity: Including diversity of race and ethnicity, gender, abilities, sexual identities, religious affiliation and economic status and age.
  • Awareness: Awareness of the values of equity, diversity and inclusion, and how these relate to the practice of professional engineering and the role of PEO as a regulator.
  • Inclusive:  Ability to foster an environment of openness and respect; and ensure participation and decision-making processes are inclusive and nonbiased.
  • Cultural Fluency: Ability to understand, reflect, and respect cultural differences.

About PEO Council: Under the Professional Engineers Act, the PEO Council is the governing body and board of directors of PEO, responsible for managing and administering its affairs. 

Council is a governing-type board that directs and controls. It directs by setting strategic vision and direction. It controls by monitoring and evaluating actual results to gain confidence that the organization is moving in the direction set.

About the role of Councillors: Councillors have a duty to carry out their responsibilities in a manner that serves and protects the public interest. Although elected, Councillors do not represent any constituencies or interests other than the public interest. Councillors have a fiduciary duty to conduct themselves with an undivided duty of loyalty, good faith, and diligence to act on behalf of PEO and its public interest mandate.
