Discovery to Impact: Innovative Mechatronics Engineering for Aerospace, Energy, Water, Sustainability and Advanced Manufacturing to Solve Global Grand Challenges.

The Professional Engineers Ontario, West Toronto (PEO-WT) Chapter is pleased to invite you to our AGM & Technical Seminar:

Technical Seminar Abstract : Globally, 884 million people lack clean drinking water and 759 million lack reliable electricity. Many water-scarce regions are remote, off-grid, with abundant renewable energy resources. This presentation highlights her on-going research spanning sustainable water, energy, food, and healthy indoor air quality required for resilient communities, climate change adaptation, and a sustainable, technology advanced and prosperous Canada. The technical seminar will cover renewable-powered water treatment systems; computational modeling and experimental validation of COVID-19 aerosols for improved HVAC design for lecture halls, workplaces and airplanes; materials development for carbon capture; exploring the use of nanobubbles to grow food in space; and drone-based litter audits. Her multidisciplinary research uses modeling, robotics, machine learning, experimental systems, material characterization, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled smart systems, autonomous technologies, nanotechnology, and advanced manufacturing. Applications span drinking water, power generation, automotive, mechatronics, aerospace, municipalities, manufacturing and mining. With funding support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) Prof. Freire-Gormaly is mobilizing knowledge on a global scale and translating scientific discovery into impact through research excellence that strengthens Canada.

Guest Speaker:

Dr. Marina Freire-Gormaly, PhD

Dr. Marina Freire-Gormaly, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at York University’s Lassonde School of Engineering. Her research spans aerosol transmission in indoor spaces, solarpowered reverseosmosis water treatment for remote communities, and hydroponic systems for space environments. She also works on machine learning for smart energy and water systems, advanced manufacturing, IoT enabled smart systems, and additive manufacturing. Previously, she worked at Ontario Power Generation on the Darlington New Nuclear and Refurbishment Projects and contributed to the World Bank’s RISE initiative. She is an associate editor for the Elsevier Journal Desalination and Water Treatment and she enables, trains and supports the next generation of engineers to tackle global grand challenges. She serves as the Chair of the Indoor Air Quality Task Group (Buildings & Dwellings) for the National Building Code of Canada.

Registration:

  • Limited to 100 due to room capacity/fire safety
  • If you pre-registered & can’t attend, please let Roman S. Lysiak ([email protected]) know so that a person from the waiting list may attend in your stead
  • Free advance tickets at Eventbrite.ca
  • For more information and events like this, check the West Toronto Chapter website.

By registering and attending the WT technical seminar, you could potentially earn Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits. CPDs are essential for professional engineers & limited license holders to renew their licenses annually through the PEO PEAK Program. Presently, PEO does not accredit learning activities offered by providers of continuing professional development (CPD), and PEO does not endorse CPD providers either. Participants are responsible for self-determining which learning activities or portions of learning activities are relevant for their CPD needs. PEAK CPD criteria are explained at www.peopeak.ca. If you're wondering whether this event offering may qualify you for CPD credits, click here to learn more: https://www.peo.on.ca/licence-holders/mandatory-cpd
