The Limited Licence for Faculty Members
Guideline for a Specific Scope Licence for Faculty Members

Scope of Practice: Teaching courses that are primarily engineering science and engineering design and conducting engineering-related research with a university.

Requirements per Regulation 941(Notes: 1)
Application for the above Scope of Practice

1. Complete the application and provide the supporting documentation.

The application fee for registration as a holder of a limited licence is $300.

2. A total of 13 years of experience in engineering work, including the years spent in obtaining the post-secondary academic training.

Post-secondary academic training in engineering, pure or applied science or mathematics credit up to:

  • four years for a bachelor's degree
  • two years for a master's degree
  • three years for a PhD.
Engineering experience relevant to the teaching of engineering science or design:
  • Teaching of engineering
  • Teaching assistant
  • Research in engineering, applied science, computer science or applied mathematics
  • Industry engineering experience

3. At least one year of such experience under the supervision and direction of a licence holder authorized to practise professional engineering in the province or territory in Canada in which the experience was acquired.

May be obtained any time after the completion of the bachelor's degree and requires a P.Eng. supervisor (Notes: 2)

  • Department Head
  • Industrial P.Eng. Supervisor

4. At least the last two years of the experience in the services within the practice of professional engineering with respect to which the limited licence is to apply. (Notes: 3)

The last two years of the experience must have been either teaching engineering science or design or conducting applied research in an engineering faculty at a university. The most recent year must be at the stated university faculty of engineering for which the limited licence will be issued.

5. Successful completion of the Professional Practice Examination.

The fee for writing or rewriting the Professional Practice Examination is $165.

6. Good character.

Assessed through the questions on the application and character references.

7. Payment of the fee prescribed by this Regulation for a limited licence.

  • The registration fee for an applicant for registration as a holder of a limited licence whose application is accepted is $250.
  • The annual fee for a limited licence is $220.

Notes:

  1. Regulations are subject to revision from time to time and the current regulation applies.
  2. The P.Eng. supervisor must provide assurance that the applicant has acquired the stated experience.
  3. Experience in engineering work, including the experience in the services within the practice of professional engineering with respect to which the limited licence is to apply does not have to be in Canada, except for the one year under Requirement 3.
